Wednesdays at Noon Wednesdays at Noon

Starting Wednesdays at noon, Pioneer 90.1 presents "All Songs Considered."

All Songs Considered is a guide to discovering new music below the radar. Every week, host Bob Boilen and producer Robin Hilton go through hundreds of new cds to find sneak previews of music that's worth getting excited about, whether it's the latest Swedish pop band, a hip hop artist going ambient, or a singer-songwriter with a twisted new take on love. Sometimes, artists or critics stop by All Songs Considered with their top picks. It?s the perfect show for listeners who want to stay current, but don?t have the time.

All Songs Considered started as an online show in 2000 after receiving countless letters from listeners who wanted to know more about the music played between stories on NPR's evening news program, All Things Considered. Now All Songs Considered has become a destination for artists such as Lily Allen or Bright Eyes to spin their favorite tunes, or musicians such as Wilco, Bjork Sigur Ros or Ben Gibbard webcast their live concerts. It is a show that one week can feature the music of Portugal and the next feature the White Stripes or Andrew Bird.

All Songs Considered has a dedicated and growing online audience: Hundreds of thousands listen to All Songs Considered on the web and via podcast every month and the All Songs podcast is consistently ranked the #1 music podcast in iTunes.

Give it a listen Wednesdays at Noon on Pioneer 90.1.

Beautiful background noise...

Northland Community & Technical College is remodeling our old space in preparation for the New Media program set to launch Fall 2010. If you hear lots of pounding and banging in the background, don't worry. It's just a few friends jackhammering a few walls down. For the time being, We're broadcasting from the Robotics Laboratory next door. Because of this, we are running with limited resources and we're doing the best we can. But, don't stop making your song requests, and supporting your local community members' shows. They probably need the moral support now more than ever!

Speaking of remodeling, we've been doing a little work to the 90.1 playlist as well. Starting this week, you'll be hearing shows like Sound Opinions (Monday noon) and Acoustic Cafe (Tuesday noon). We've also split up the formats a bit and are offering a deeper Americana mix in the mornings, and then a straighter AAA mix in the afternoons. There is so much great music coming out lately, we are trying to create appropriate space for it all. But, it doesn't all nessecarily work side by side, hence the morning/afternoon split. We'd love to hear your feedback about this. Send us an email anytime.

Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons:

Saturday, June 19th 7pm

Opening Band: KROME

From New York’s Central Park,

to TRF Fairgrounds

On June 8, Appleton, Wisconsin-based alt-rock band Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons will play New York’s Central Park. 11 days later, they’ll play a slightly more intimate venue: the Pennington County Fairgrounds in Thief River Falls.

The band’s northwest Minnesota appearance is part of Pioneer 90.1’s free concert series, which up til now has featured local bands. “It’s the start of the summer season, and we wanted to do something bigger this time,” Pioneer 90.1 Operations Manager Ben Kosharek said. “We’ve been playing Cory’s music for over a year, and when we talked about bringing in a national act, we thought of Cory because of his Midwestern roots.”

The radio station, based at Northland Community & Technical College, calls itself “Roots Radio.” “Our weekday format features music that has an earthy feel,” Northland Director of New Media Mark Johnson said. “We like to play artists who have a roots rock edge, and Cory fits the bill perfectly.”

Chisel’s bio says he was “sheltered” from pop music from an early age, playing music with his grandfather’s nine guitar-playing brothers. His uncle Roger, a blues musician, shared his record collection – a collection filled with music from Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Robert Johnson, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan.

Chisel also has family from Dylan territory -- in Babbitt and Ely, Minnesota.

Cory Chisel and the Wondering Son’s album, “Death Won’t Send a Letter,” came out last September on Black Seal/Sony BMG Music. Chisel was joined on the Nashville sessions by members of The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, the Greenhornes, and by fellow roots-rocker Brendon Benson.

The band has performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and will appear at this year’s Newport Folk and Glastonbury Festivals.

Pioneer 90.1 will record the concert for later broadcast. It will also be made available statewide to stations in the Association of Minnesota Public and Educational Radio Stations network.

Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons perform the free concert Saturday, June 19 at 7PM at the Pennington County Fairgrounds in Thief River Falls. Concertgoers should bring lawnchairs or blankets. Concertgoers are urged to arrive early to get a seat.

Pioneer 90.1 presents "The Mayor & The Mailman"

Two familiar Thief River Falls personalities are beginning a new call-in radio show on Pioneer 90.1 FM. Thief River Falls Mayor Steve “Beaver” Nordhagen and longtime postal carrier Kjell Melvie are teaming up for “The Mayor and the Mailman Show,” Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m., on Pioneer 90.1. A rebroadcast of the show airs Thursday mornings at 7:00 a.m. The shows are also available on the station’s website, www.radionorthland.org

The duo’s first evening on the air covered topics like the TRForward Community Kick-Off, a discussion regarding additional uses for the Ralph Englestad Arena, and this summer’s Mayor and the Mailman charity bike run. Nordhagen’s position in city government and Melvie’s involvement in DFL politics give the hosts insight into the topics area residents are talking about.

Northland College New Media Director Mark Johnson said Pioneer 90.1 plans to move the show from the station’s studios to a more public location, possibly an area restaurant, to encourage interaction with the hosts. “These guys are naturals for radio,” Johnson said. “They’re talking about public-affairs topics, and they do it in a way that’s a lot fun to listen to.” (www.northlandcollege.edu)

NORTHLAND RADIO STATION RECEIVES ARTS AND CULTURE GRANT

Pioneer 90.1 presents free concert series

Pioneer 90.1 has received a Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Programming grant totaling $238,500 through June 2011. The station will use the grant to produce programming based on local musicians, filmmakers, authors, and historians.

Part of the grant will be used to present free concerts featuring Minnesota musicians. The shows will be recorded, mixed with interviews with the performers and made available to other independent public radio stations in the state.

The first concert in the performance series will feature Thief River Falls-based blues performers Little Bobby and the Storm, Saturday, March 6 at 7pm at the Northland College theater in Thief River Falls.

Also being developed is a new program called “ArtsFocus,” made up of interviews and radio documentaries about area arts and cultural topics. The first show features an interview with the director of the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site in Cooperstown, ND. Area filmmakers are invited to submit scripts and will be given access to shoot at the site.

The grant allows Pioneer 90.1 to make its programming available on platforms beyond the station’s coverage area. Pioneer 90.1 and the other 11 stations in the AMPERS (Association of Minnesota Public and Educational Radio Stations) network are using the Public Radio Exchange website (www.prx.org) to share and archive original programming. The stations are also making programming available on their websites.

AMPERS is made up of volunteer-driven stations like KAXE in Grand Rapids and WTIP in Grand Marais, along with stations belonging to educational institutions like KUOM at the University of Minnesota, KVSC in St Cloud, and KBEM, which belongs to the Minneapolis Public Schools. “The diverse programs these stations produce deserve to be heard by a larger audience than the stations’ coverage areas allow,” Pioneer 90.1 Station Manager Mark Johnson said. “This grant gives all of us the chance to contribute meaningful programming statewide and beyond.”

Johnson plans to compile highlights from other AMPERS stations’ programming into a weekly show called “Network M-N,” which will be heard on Pioneer 90.1 Fridays at 6pm.

“The variety and quality of the pieces produced by AMPERS stations compares very well with what you hear on Minnesota Public Radio, which is a much larger organization. Whether it’s a short news piece on skijoring produced by KUOM, or a half-hour radio documentary on the Ojibwe Trading Post Museum on Mille Lacs Lake produced by KVSC, this is programming that brings our state’s arts and cultural heritage alive. We want to add the voices of Northwest Minnesota artists and historians to the mix,” Johnson said. The station is seeking local program producers to create additional original arts and cultural programming.

Pioneer 90.1, which went on the air in 1972, is the only radio station licensed to a Minnesota two-year college. Johnson believes that distinction will attract students from outside the area to attend the Radio Business program, which launches in August as part of Northland’s Center for New Media. The station’s new digital multicast signal will be on the air as soon as mid-March.

KSRQ participating in KVSC's 31st Annual Trivia Contest!!

YouTube-Video

Trivia weekend was created in 1980 to counteract the cabin fever inherent to Minnesota winters, and premiered with 20 teams. In 2009, Trivia Weekend attracted 76 teams, many of them participating via the Internet from various locations across the Midwest. As the weekend has grown in popularity, so has its organizational sophistication. Last year, a record 24 trivia answer hotlines were staffed by volunteers. KVSC has more than 200 volunteers working toward the success of the annual station event. In addition, dozens of St. Cloud businesses show their support with donations of food and funding.

We wish your team the best of luck in 2010!

If you'd like to participate in this contest, KSRQ can help! Email BEN, or click on the flyer above to visit www.kvsc.org for more information.

It's that time of year again. We're asking for your financial support. Your support in the last few years has been very generous, and has enabled us to do some big things for this station. We've also heard your new ideas, and we have some great opportunities ahead of us that are going to be costly. For one, in the near future, we'll be installing 2 HD stations that will be free of charge to you. One channel will feature Alternative/ Indie rock, and the other will bring back the Oldies. The analog station you enjoy now will stay the same, but with a few improvements like gear that will transmit Artist/Title information to both your radio, and our website.

So, you see, we have a lot of work to do. Please consider either becoming a supporter, or continuing your support of this service. We can't do it without you! Given the economic forecast, services like this are constantly on the chopping block. But, if your support continues the way it has, we will continue to be able to prove to our major funders that this service is of great value to the region. It's a bit of a snowball effect. Click the blue button above to pledge online.

Thanks so much!

Also, check out all the NEW TUNES we're playing!
